How To Install A Walk-in Cooler or Freezer

Planning is critical to success for new and seasoned business owners alike. There are many reasons new walk-in installations fail, but one of the most common is not planning or preparing properly. As Benjamin Franklin so famously said, "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." Just as you developed a solid plan for your business, the same should be true when you are ready to install a new walk-in cooler or freezer. Be sure you have a solid team around you. Having a reputable and trusted commercial refrigeration installer who is properly licensed, certified and insured is essential, along with a walk-in cooler/freezer manufacturer you can rely on. Of course you'll want to get several quotes and bids, but go the extra mile and check out references and reviews so that you have a good idea about the quality of work, expertise, and professionalism you can expect.

Keep in mind that others have schedules, too. Of course your WICF installation has to work with your schedule, but it's important to know what will work for the cooler/freezer manufacturer, refrigeration tech and everyone involved. With manufacturers it's sometimes a case of supply and demand; you will want to check on lead times at the time you get a quote, and at the time you place the order. On the day your walk-in cooler or freezer is to be delivered, your certified refrigeration installer's schedule should coincide in order for you to avoid extra costs from your installer, the walk-in cooler/freezer manufacturer, or shipping company. Large equipment such as walk-in coolers and freezers may require a team of people or even a forklift to unload, so be prepared. The last thing you want is to face additional costs by rescheduling. Everyone needs to be on the same page for success.

Be sure the electrician and refrigeration installation technician are equipped to work with the refrigeration equipment as specified by the walk-in cooler/freezer manufacturer. In order to avoid any problems in the future, the walk-in box must be properly installed and the refrigeration equipment must be suitably commissioned. This is a MUST to ensure your WICF functions as it should.

Once installed, make sure all of the WICF components are in good working order. The walk-in cooler/freezer should be checked to ensure it is sealed tight against air leakage. On a frequent basis, check to ensure there is no accumulation of water or ice buildup inside of the box and monitor the refrigeration system to ensure there aren't any significant fluctuations in temperature.
