Understanding the R-22 Phase-out

Many of you are aware of the upcoming laws that require the phase-out of R-22. Below are a few frequently asked questions to use as a general guideline, as well as related websites you can visit to get additional information. We have provided a list of products that will help you make the switch.

1. Why is R-22 refrigerant dangerous?

When released in the atmosphere, HCFC-22 (R-22) is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon that damages the ozone layer that shields the earth from harmful UV rays.

2. What is the timeline for the R-22 regulations?

3. What are suitable refrigerant substitutes for R-22? Which refrigerants will
Heatcraft Refrigeration Products (HRP) use?

The Environmental Protection Agency maintains a list of acceptable and unacceptable substitutes for commercial refrigeration needs. Substitutes include hydrofluorocarbon's (HFC's) such as R-404A and R-507, which are blends of other HFC refrigerants and are non-flammable, have low toxicity and no ozone depletion potential. These are the two refrigerants that HRP has chosen as R-22 replacements.

For the complete list of recommended replacements, go to:
http://www.epa.gov/ozone/snap/refrigerants/lists/foodref.html

4. How does R-404A/R-507 differ from R-22?

Although pressures of R-404A/R-507 are higher than R-22 at normal condensing temperatures,
R-404A/R-507 refrigerants have higher cooling capacities. Mass flow rates for R-404A/R-507 are up to 45% higher than R-22 and synthetic lubricants are used.

5. How can you prepare for the upcoming phase-out?

•  Ensure your ability to service existing R-22 equipment by always recovering, recycling, and reclaiming existing R-22 supplies
•  Retrofit or replace R-22 systems when possible and choose R-404A/R-507 systems for new installations
•  Train all personnel on proper refrigerant installation and handling
•  Identify and repair system leaks

6. What HRP products are available to help you make the switch?

From the PRO3™ Side Mount Packaged System to the Monarch Air-Cooled Condenser, HRP offers a full line of R-404A/R-507 low and medium temperature refrigeration products.

We can help make your transition from R-22 a breeze! Below is a list of recommended replacements:
