Federal Energy Independence and Security Act


The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007(H.R. 6) sets new standards for commercial walk-in coolers and freezers. This act establishes a single, uniform federal requirement and impacts equipment used on new walk-in coolers and freezers that are manufactured on or after January 1, 2009.
Exemption: Products designed and marketed exclusively for medical, scientific or research purposes are exempt from this regulation.

Walk-In Cooler and Freezer Equipment


Unit Coolers
Fan motors that are less than 1 hp and less than 460V must comply with one of the following:
1.  Motor must be electronically commutated (EC)
2.  Motor must be 3-phase

Condensers and Condensing Units
Fan motors that are less than 1 hp must comply with one of the following:
1.  Motor must be electronically commutated (EC)
2.  Motor must be permanent split capacitor (PSC)
3.  Motor must be 3-phase

All Heatcraft Refrigeration Products’ unit coolers designed for walk-in boxes are available with electronically commutated (EC) motors as an option. This includes all of our Low Profile, Medium Profile, Center Mount, Low Velocity and Glycol product lines. All our condensing units are available with PSC or 3-phase motors and all condensers are available with EC or 3-phase motors. All PRO³ packaged refrigeration systems are available with EC motors in the evaporator section and PSC motors in the condensing unit section.

Regulations passed under California Title 20 are exempt. Businesses operating in California should comply with those standards.
